EnPro Industries, Inc. (EnPro) is a leading provider of engineered industrial products for the processing and general manufacturing industries. EnPro manufactures and markets industrial sealing products, seals for heavy-duty trucking, metal and metal-polymer bearings and filament wound products, air compressors, and heavy duty, medium-speed diesel, natural gas and dual fuel reciprocating engines. Headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, EnPro has 43 manufacturing facilities located throughout North and South America, Europe and Asia; EnPro employs over 5,000 employees and supports more than 50,000 customers located in over 100 countries worldwide.

Challenge

Create an Affordable and Effective Ethics & Compliance Education Program that Exceeds Regulations
EnPro became a publically held company in May 2002. As part of organizing the company, management made sure to follow the best corporate governance practices, which included policies and procedures designed to meet or exceed the requirements of Sarbanes Oxley and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines. EnPro's Human Resources department and Internal Audit office recognized the need to establish an ethics and compliance program to ensure that all of its employees are well-versed and understand the company's Code of Conduct and other important policies.

EnPro needed to tailor its education program to various constituencies, including new employees, supervisors and the general workforce. The topics for the program included workplace harassment, corporate data privacy, and global environment health and safety training – in multiple languages – for employees on three continents. The program needed to impact all organizational levels, and include a variety of learning approaches, including both online courses coupled with offline experiential learning programs.

Solution

Collaborate for Acceptance and Adoption throughout the Enterprise
Understanding the power of collaboration, EnPro partnered with LRN to ensure that its "EnTegrity" program introduces key cultural viewpoints and company policies for all employees, LRN provides the domestic and international ethics and compliance curriculum for all of EnPro's companies, worldwide.

LRN provides EnPro with an expansive course curriculum so that employees remain engaged with topical and updated material that speaks directly to them. EnPro’s ethics and compliance education program is focused on real-world scenarios that employees might encounter on a daily basis. LRN also works with EnPro to customize the training so that employees are not focusing on isolated incidents, but areas that directly relate to EnPro's overall business.

EnPro worked with LRN to establish guidelines and best practices for bringing the company's Code of Conduct to life. EnPro's CEO Stephen E. Macadam, sets the tone for new employees and is an internal champion for reaffirming the importance of how the company operates as a whole. Every year, Macadam and all other salaried, exempt employees reaffirm the company's Code of Conduct by reviewing and certifying their knowledge of the company's key beliefs.

Result

An Inspired Corporate Culture
EnPro employees understand that the ethics and compliance training program is designed to help them improve productivity and operational excellence as part of the company's corporate culture, and not as a separate educational exercise. The EnTegrity Program is widely accepted and employee feedback on the training has been extremely positive.

EnPro and LRN interact regularly to maintain worldwide consistency among all of EnPro's organizations and to determine which educational programs are making the most impact. An LRN team that oversees the company's worldwide ethics and compliance program works to ensure that EnPro can administer and manage the program as efficiently as possible. EnTegrity is almost completely automated, with HR and Internal Audit focusing on the content and impact of the program rather than its distribution to employees. In addition, LRN provides EnTegrity's program administrator the ability to target and segment the employee base on a detailed level to customize the program by function and geography, further ensuring that employees are engaged and not just simply meeting regulatory compliance guidelines for the company. In short, LRN helps EnPro get the right information to the right people at the right time.

EnPro asks that its employees participate in at least four training sessions a year, one each quarter, to maintain continuity and keep individuals engaged and updated on all relevant risk or topic areas. The company mandates 100 percent completions to ensure all employees have the same insights and understand the company's high operational standards. All employees must also recertify that they have read and understand the Code of Conduct annually and will conduct themselves accordingly.

Future plans for ethics and compliance program development include training designed specifically for EnPro's hourly-based workforce and making available LRN's offline offerings as part of the program. These flexible education approaches will augment EnPro's current online training initiative in order to reach offline employees who are not able to take advantage of the online initiatives.

"It is crucial that our messaging, expectations and unique corporate culture be instilled in all of our companies, which are spread out globally in various industries," said Bob McKinney, vice president of Human Resources for EnPro. "The collaborative nature of LRN's holistic solution is consistently effective in reaching all levels of our organization. It is both easy to use and agile, allowing us to focus on the material we wish to inspire in our employees, rather than how we will distribute it."
