Bringing Six Sigma quality to legal research at DuPont

In 1992, DuPont Legal examined its practice and developed the DuPont Legal Model, a comprehensive and integrated process that was designed to help improve the quality, cost and efficiency of legal services. The Model encourages DuPont to constantly revisit the way it handles the business of the law, including assessing the costs of producing legal research and the effectiveness with which it is used.

DuPont implemented a Six Sigma quality study to examine alternative means of managing the creation and dissemination of legal research. The company obtained pricing and work from LRN and several other legal research providers. The pricing and work were then compared to that of the company's existing network of primary law firms.

The Six Sigma study revealed that LRN research offered a significant savings over traditional sources. As importantly, it revealed that the savings came without any sacrifice in work quality. Additional savings were identified through the use of the LRN KnowledgeBank, an online library that allows the sharing of work produced by LRN and DuPont's outside counsel with the rest of the team. DuPont has enjoyed a 10-20% reduction in research-related fees and disbursements as a direct result of using the KnowledgeBank. This led DuPont to select LRN to join the DuPont Legal Model as the primary service provider of legal research.
