LRN to help businesses comply with new law mandating sexual harassment education

LOS ANGELES, October 6, 2004—Among the 571 bills California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed September 30th is AB 1825, containing a new requirement for California businesses with 50 or more employees to provide all supervisors with two hours of mandatory training and education every two years on the specific issue of preventing sexual harassment in the workplace. Newly hired supervisors must be trained within six months of the time they assume supervisory responsibilities. Subjects covered include guidance regarding federal and state statutory provisions concerning the prevention of sexual harassment and the remedies available to victims of such harassment. The new requirement augments existing state and federal legislation requiring all employers to ensure a workplace free of sexual harassment.

The new law specifies that employers have the choice to conduct the required education in the form of classroom instruction or "other effective interactive training and education." Many companies have discovered the benefits of using engaging and interactive online courses as a foundational component of an overall initiative to eliminate sexual harassment. LRN®, a leading provider of legal, compliance, and ethics education and corporate governance services, offers two specific online courses along with related management tools and services on how to avoid sexual harassment in the workplace through its Legal Compliance and Ethics Center™(LCEC®). The Web-based education solution also provides a broad array of courses on other critical legal, ethics, and compliance issues.

"The pernicious impact of sexual harassment represents a tremendous distraction that defocuses business and exacts an untold human cost," said Dov Seidman, Chairman and CEO of LRN. "Our courses on the prevention of sexual harassment enable entire workforces—whether a company has 500 or 500,000 employees—to gain a common understanding of their rights and responsibilities in this crucial area."

Employees throughout the world have completed over five million LRN courses on a wide range of subjects, and almost a million supervisors and employees have completed LRN courses on avoiding sexual harassment. All LCEC courses are designed to help employees recognize and avoid unlawful and unethical behavior in the workplace.

LRN uses leading subject matter experts to develop its courses, transforming and translating this knowledge into an effective online learning experience. LRN hosts and updates all coursework, dramatically streamlining implementation and administration for its customers and providing virtually continuous availability wherever an Internet connection exists.
